Prayer eliminates painful effects of a serious fall

Although my plan had been to spend Christmas with my family, for various reasons I was to spend the holidays at home, alone.

My only close friend I would see for sure would be a local dog that always stops by for a swim and walk along Galway Bay. In tossing out a stick into the bay for him, I failed to notice that the high tides had made the rocks very slippery and quite difficult to walk over. In throwing a heavy stick, I lost my foothold and very heavily. As I fell I remember thinking "God is All."

Getting up was slow and painful, and as I walked home I wondered what I might have done to my aching upper body, and what steps I should take for my protection and safety. I sat alone at home in an upright chair; with my body at an awkward angle needed for comfort, and prayed for guidance. As I had a special opportunity, being alone and undistracted, I wanted to see this discomfort healed through my own prayer. I thought of Jesus' words in Luke's Gospel, "Physician, heal thyself" (4:23). During the next three days, despite the pain, one thing was totally obvious to me: something magnificent had happened in my life—contrary to appearances. At times I felt a warm, comforting presence, and my meditations and prayers lifted me to a new level of spiritual awareness. I felt wonderful, despite the circumstances. Yet I was afraid that if I should fall while in this state, the consequences could be serious.
