Traveling fearlessly
How I faced down the fear of terrorism
I was preparing for a long-planned trip to Greece and Turkey. About a month before the trip, NATO bombings began north of Greece. Many in the area I planned to visit opposed the bombings, and a series of anti-American activities began.
I prayed each day to understand that God, good, is all power and governs all mankind. Hate, evil, discord, are powerless in the face of an understanding of God's omnipotence.
Still, as the time drew nearer, I became more fearful. Some days I felt God was all power, and other days I was overtaken by fear. I continued to pray as well as to monitor the news agencies to keep up with the latest events. Just as the fear was subsiding, I received a call from a relative in that area telling of a bomb in a local hotel and suggesting that I cancel the trip.
