PETER V. UEBERROTH ON THE OLYMPIC SPIRIT

Although only one of the athletes in this week's Cover Story has competed in the Olympic Games, each of them is imbibing the Olympic ideal in her own way. To get a better understanding of this ideal and how it can touch non-athletes as well as competitors, the Sentinel asked Peter V. Ueberroth for his thoughts.

Mr. Ueberroth organized the successful XXIII Olympic Games in Los Angeles, which produced a $250 million profit—the first time this had ever happened in the Olympics. At the closing ceremonies, the eighty-four thousand people in the stands gave Ueberroth a standing ovation. In 1985, he was chosen as TIME magazine's Man of the Year. He continues to be a successful businessman in California today.

The Los Angeles Olympic Games are almost a decade and a half in the past. In one sense it seems like yesterday, but obviously in other ways so much has changed.
