A BOOK THAT OPENS THE SCRIPTURES

Twenty-five years ago, when I first read Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, my emotions were so stirred that I literally wept as I read the book. The experience reminds me of how two of Jesus' disciples, on their way to Emmaus, felt after they had traveled and spoken with the newly-resurrected Saviour: "Did not our heart burn within us, while hetalked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures?" (Luke 24:32)

Science and Health—and especially its Key to the Scriptures—opened up the Bible to me and so unlocked its meaning. When I read gospel texts now, there is an immediacy to the events described, as though I'm there participating, not observing. The presence of Christ is vivid, and this recognition of Christ's presence has changed my life, just as it did Mrs. Eddy's.

The discovery of the Science of Christianity by Mrs. Eddy followed her spiritual understanding of the Bible. Her spiritual journey led from the generally accepted religious views of her day to a calling apart from them, to a path less traveled. The Holy Scriptures were her guide, healer, and teacher. Science and Health assures one: "The Scriptures are very sacred. Our aim must be to have them understood spiritually, for only by this understanding can truth be gained" (p. 547).
