Recurring back pain permanently healed
Over many years I had experienced several brief encounters with what could be described as lower back pain. While these attacks would severely limit my normal activity, I looked on them more as annoying experiences than as serious problems. When a similar condition appeared a few years ago, however, I decided to affirm, as best I could, man's freedom as a spiritual idea of God. I knew, as a student of the Bible and of the Science of Christianity, that physical conditions have a mental cause. My prayer was to correct the mental error that was preventing harmonious action. Science and Health explains, "Christian Science deals wholly with the mental cause in judging and destroying disease" (p. 157).
When for over a week there was still no relief, I became fearful and discouraged. The condition worsened to the point of painful immobility. The loss of normal feeling in my arms and legs prompted me to call a Christian Science practitioner for additional prayerful treatment. As we talked, I realized that I had, in fact, been holding resentment against a lawyer who was working for a member of our family. Because I wanted to let go of my resentment, I was impelled to call this attorney, although it was not clear at that time what I should say or what response I would receive. When my call was answered, I was immediately thanked for calling. Our conversation was cordial, and although the legal matter was never mentioned, neither were any of my imagined concerns. Complete respect for each other governed the discussion. My resentment simply faded away.
