Ulcer healed
Each week since its beginning in 1898, the Christian Science Sentinel has published a representative sample of verified testimonies of healing, told in their own words by men, women, and children throughout the world.
"Where there is no friction, there is no wear," was the response of an elderly gentleman who had been asked the reason for his longevity and good health. Although I can't remember where I read or heard this, it reminded me of a healing I experienced when I was nineteen years old. I had left home at seventeen to move into an apartment in a nearby town so I could be close to my place of work. Eventually I was employed in the benefits office of a large industrial corporation of approximately seven thousand employees. One of my responsibilities was assisting in the investigation of industrial injuries (workmen's compensation), computing the company's liability, and typing the compensation checks to the claimants.
I had put my practice of Christian Science on a back burner to make room for an active social life. Along with friends from school, and new friends and activities through work, I had also joined the local United Service Organization (USO), which provided a constant source of dances, parties, picnics, pool tournaments, and endless dates. I knew Christian Science would always be there when I needed it, but everything appeared to be going so well that I didn't seem to need it. One day, however, I realized that I was experiencing stomachaches on an almost daily basis. I had assumed that the difficulty came with the stress of my job. There had been several instances where, either in person or through obscene telephone calls, I had received threats of bodily harm—and even death—if I didn't give someone a bigger check for an injury. As the weeks went by, I found myself answering questions about sick benefits, handling doctor bills, reading medical descriptions, and one day even facing an angry employee holding a gun.
