Healing for the community

I love my community, and I wanted to help it overcome the problems of gang warfare.

My prayers to be useful led me to become a Christian Science chaplain at a juvenile court camp. For the past twenty months I've been providing weekly Sunday School classes for fifteen-to eighteen-year-old boys who have been involved in gangs and serious crimes. It has been a privilege to see some of these young men become diligent about rejecting evil thoughts from the carnal mind and begin listening and being obedient to God, divine Mind.

In Romans, the Apostle Paul states: "To be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God. But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you" (8:6–9). Studying these verses in the Bible has opened the eyes of many of these young men to the reason they have been involved in crime and other unsavory activity.
