In November of 1994, I visited my family for the Thanksgiving...

In November of 1994, I visited my family for the Thanksgiving holiday. On the last day of the visit I had an appointment with a local dentist for a yearly cleaning. The dentist commented that I had a small cavity and that I should make another appointment to have it filled. Since I would be leaving town the next day, he told me it could wait until the following year when I returned.

The dentist found no evidence of a cavity.

I could not accept the belief that I was less than the whole, complete—and completely spiritual—child of God. So, upon leaving the dentist's office I immediately began in prayer to dispute this verdict of a cavity. I reasoned that since God is Spirit, and Spirit is substance, I reflected the true substance of God, which is perfect and unchanging. Science and Health explains, "Substance is that which is eternal and incapable of discord and decay" (p. 468). This inspired reasoning helped uplift my thinking.

I also called a Christian Science practitioner to treat me in prayer. She reminded me of some Biblical facts from Ephesians, namely that I am "rooted and grounded in love" (3:17) as the child of God, and as such my true being is "fitly joined together" (4:16). The practitioner brought to my attention the fact that I experience the thoughts I think, and when my thoughts come from God (whose thoughts include no false belief of a cavity), that false belief cannot be imaged forth on my body. Finally she assured me that the dentist is subject to the same laws of God as I am, and therefore he should see only perfection, for that, in reality, is all there is to see.

During my visit the following year, the dentist found no evidence of a cavity. His only comment was that my mouth looked great! This took place over two years ago.

For this healing and for many others—including that of pneumonia as a small child, the effects of having my hand slammed in a car door, direction in finding employment and housing, the demonstration of supply in funding my college education, protection while traveling, and direction in relationships—I am extremely thankful to God.
