I suffered from the pain of rheumatism

I suffered from the pain of rheumatism. At first the occurrences of pain were not strong; relief came quickly through prayer. Then two years ago the problem worsened.

One winter day, while I was spending a weekend in the mountains, I woke up in so much back pain that I could not get up. I could not even move. I began to pray, but the pain did not yield, so my sister called a Christian Science practitioner and asked her to treat me.

Soon I began to feel conscious of the presence of the Christ—that is, I began to see what really existed, which was God and good. I began to understand that, since God is the source of all movement, I must express activity that was harmonious and free from pain. I also understood that it is God who originates all action in His creation. Man is the reflection of God. As we read in John, "The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things so-ever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise" (5:19). In Science and Health we also read that God is "the great I am; the all-knowing, all-seeing, all-acting, all-wise, all-loving, and eternal" (p. 587).
