Beyond traditional boundaries

Earlier this year, 325 people from twenty-two countries came together for five days at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis to explore the kind of community they would like to build or preserve.

To help direct this exploration, one day was devoted to strategy and action meetings for continuing work in three areas: the Americas; race relations in cities; and building community through the creative arts. Plenary sessions, workshops, and less formal evening programs focused on the question "How do we go beyond traditional boundaries to build more just and effective communities?"

One of the participants, Steve Dickinson, said he felt that delegates soon discovered it is essential "to go deeper into their own spiritual traditions and to find points of unity through the discovery of common experiences and traditions." He said that people welcomed the daily small discussion groups, pre-breakfast meditation gatherings, and opportunities for individual encounters of real depth."
