How I prayed after I lost my job

Many newspapers, magazines, and television programs have featured stories describing corporate consolidations and mergers that have resulted in layoffs of many longtime employees. While it is true that vast changes are taking place, I have learned that one's real security and well-being rest entirely with God, whose love is, and always will be, changeless.

After service in the United States Navy during the Korean War, I joined a large shipping company and over a period of years rose to a senior position. By this time another man and I were competing quite aggressively for the future presidency of the company. In the ensuing struggle I did not prevail. I was forced to resign and was given only a small severance payment. Initially, I was devastated by the loss of my job and the associations that I had enjoyed for so many years. I had a large family to support, and our savings were limited.

In the days and nights that followed, I wrestled with the feeling that I had lost something of great value and that my family must suffer as a consequence. There were many nights when I slept only a few hours. Upon waking, the fear of what might happen became so overpowering that I couldn't go back to sleep. Eventually, I was able to turn wholeheartedly to God as the only power that could affect my life.
