Early in 1990, I heard about Christian Science from the mother...
Early in 1990, I heard about Christian Science from the mother of a friend of my daughter. I invited this woman to my home to teach me a particular stitch in needlepoint so I could decorate a sweater, and this person spoke to me about Christian Science.
I was very interested in what she said and asked her to take me where I could learn more about this religion. I waited impatiently for the appointment which she had made for me with a Christian Science practitioner. When talking with this practitioner, I appreciated what she discussed; the logical spiritual concepts and their promise of a better human life brought hope and encouragement.
I began attending Christian Science church services. In order to do this, I secretly had to leave my husband and the rest of the family; I couldn't imagine their reaction.
After about two months had passed, my husband began to feel ill one day with severe kidney pain. He couldn't reach a doctor to help him, and I couldn't reach the practitioner because she was traveling. I called the woman who had introduced me to Christian Science, and she advised me to give my husband copies of the Herald of Christian Science to read. I ended up giving him Science and Health.
Kidney stones healed
by reading Science and Health.
He paid attention and began to read, although with great effort because of the intense pain that he felt. He read from the beginning of the book and came to the chapter entitled "Prayer." After two hours of reading, the pain lessened and he asked for something to eat. The following day he passed some small stones without feeling any pain or discomfort.
I felt deeply grateful for our ability to prove the omnipresence of God, divine Love, and I asked my husband if he would like to go to give thanks to God publicly at the next Wednesday church service. He agreed. Since then our whole family has been studying the Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly and trying to understand more about this marvel, which came to us like a very precious gift from heaven. I know my children will find the "pearl of great price," since we all have the right to find it through spiritual understanding.
