Religion, politics, and society

More than eighty scholars and practitioners assembled recently for EPIIC's eleventh annual symposium at Tufts University, Medford, near Boston. EPIIC stands for Education for Public Inquiry and International Citizenship. This three-and-a-half-day gathering—which was open to the public—was the culmination of seven months' historical inquiry and probing by undergraduate and graduate students of contemporary religious, political, and social dilemmas. The lectures, panels, and workshops examined the resurgent role and impact of religion on global domestic policies and international relations.

In this Sentinel report, we touch on just one of several issues that were discussed—many people's skepticism and even disillusionment over what they think religion is.

One of the early discussions was on the role of religion in public life. It involved Harvard Divinity School professor Harvey Cox and Stephen A. Marini, Professor of Religion at Wellesley College, Massachusetts.
