Christian Science has given me so much in my life that I would just like to take a moment to share my gratitude for a few of the recent highlights. In her book Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Mary Baker Eddy says: "If sin, sickness, and death were understood as nothingness, they would disappear. As vapor melts before the sun, so evil would vanish before the reality of good. One must hide the other. How important, then, to choose good as the reality!" (pp. 480–481) I have had many opportunities to prove that choosing good in a situation brings immediate results.

When I was in college I was working in a factory over one of my vacations. I was on an assembly line that was putting together foam parts with hot glue. At one point I inadvertently sprayed glue on the back of one of my hands. I quickly went to the bathroom to take care of the burn and to pray. At first it was a struggle to understand that no matter what event had taken place in my human life, it could never touch the perfection of my spiritual existence. Then I realized that I had a decision to make. Either I was going to believe that pain and disfigurement could come as a result of a human event, or I was going to choose the good that is God and demonstrate the reality of my unchanging nature as God's perfect child.

I decided to choose good and began by very firmly stating to myself that there was no spiritual law that I had broken that could make me subject to pain, harm, or accident. As I washed the hand, I saw that it was starting to blister and swell. I decided not to examine this evidence of injury, however, so that I could keep clear the understanding of myself as God's image. I continued to pray, and I gently patted my hands dry with a paper towel before going back to work. There was no pain, and I found that I forgot all about the incident as I went on with my work.
