My grandfather was a Protestant minister, and in my very young years he and I spent a great deal of time discussing religion. He was very patient with my questions, never answering them directly, but instead encouraging me to find my own answers. And he would often say, "God is Love."
In my teens I read many books on New Age topics, and although I found them interesting, I still wasn't satisfied.
My spiritual search continued this way until five years ago, when it took on a new urgency. I found myself living three thousand miles from my nearest family member, taking care of a small daughter, and in a very difficult and frightening marriage. My husband at the time had a violent temper and was physically abusive. Late one night after we'd been married for several years, he became so enraged that he woke me up and a terrible scene ensued. I suddenly realized how desperate my situation had become. I remembered what my grandfather had told me: God is Love. I reached out with all my heart to the God I had been trying my entire life to understand and I said, "Please show me the truth."
