I had arranged to do volunteer work at a local nursing home on Christmas Day. Three days before Christmas, however, I came down with a cold. It wasn't unusual for me to have colds two or three times a year that were bad enough to keep me in bed for several days. I didn't know what to do. The nursing home was expecting me, and there just wasn't any way that I could make it.
When I told a co-worker of my plight, she said, "Have you ever heard of Christian Science?" I informed her that I thought it was one of "those religions" but didn't know anything about it. She explained that there were people called practitioners who healed people through prayer, and she asked if I would like to talk to one on the telephone. At that point I was desperate and very happy to try anything.
The woman I called was very kind. She talked a while about God and told me that she would treat me. She said that for the rest of the day I should deny that I had a cold. I was willing to do whatever she said.
