Since my introduction to Christian Science over forty-five years...
Since my introduction to Christian Science over forty-five years ago, I have been home ill fewer than ten days. This wonderful understanding of man's perfection in God has provided health, protection, guidance, and strength, to name a few of God's blessings for His creation.
Since my last testimony appeared in the Sentinel over seventeen years ago, I have had numerous healings. One in particular stands out. About five years ago, my arm became extremely weak, numb, and painful. I needed the assistance of my wife to put on my shirt and coat. In addition, I experienced extreme difficulty in raising the arm above my shoulder.
Following a few weeks of considerable discomfort, I became increasingly fearful. I realized fear to be an obstacle to healing, and I prayed deeply to understand more of the ever-present power of the Christ, God's expression in man, that would remove fear. As I understood more of divine Love, I felt growing peace until I was no longer afraid. Although the use of my arm continued to be limited and painful, I felt confident of healing because the fear had been replaced with the recognition that my being is spiritual, independent of matter.
I almost jumped with joy .... The pain, restricted use, and discomfort of the arm were gone.
A passage from Science and Health was particularly helpful: "Man and his Maker are correlated in divine Science, and real consciousness is cognizant only of the things of God" (p. 276). I accepted this to mean that only Godlike, spiritual qualities constituted my real existence.
A few weeks later, some workers were putting siding on my house. One of the men asked me to hand him a piece of siding, which required raising my arms above my head. I almost jumped with joy when I handed him the piece with complete ease. The pain, restricted use, and discomfort were gone. I have had full freedom and use of my arm from that moment.
Words from one of Mary Baker Eddy's poems in the Christian Science Hymnal, "My prayer, some daily good to do/ To Thine, for Thee" (No. 253), are my prayer as I daily try to express God through the good qualities He so generously gives us.
