When I was a child, my father was very impressed by a Christian Science healing he saw. The wife of a business associate, diagnosed with an incurable disease, was healed through prayer. As a result of this healing, whenever we visited Boston, my father would insist on taking my mother and me to The Mother Church for the Sunday service.
As a teenager I had a recurring illness following a mastoid operation. The family doctor predicted that my condition would probably worsen, despite the surgery.
Then a family friend invited us to a Christian Science lecture. We felt convinced just from that hour-long talk that God is the only healer, and decided we would explore Christian Science. My father was delighted when I started going to Sunday School. Although a healing of my physical problem did not come right away, mother and I continued with our study of Christian Science, learning that, because God is good, evil and disease have no power. A particularly helpful statement by Mary Baker Eddy was "Citizens of the world, accept the 'glorious liberty of the children of God,' and be free! This is your divine right" (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 227). Gradually, a complete healing came, and has been permanent.
