A few years ago I suddenly became quite ill and found it difficult to walk. My husband helped me to bed and called a Christian Scienc practitioner for me. The practitioner asked to talk to me. I listened to his assuring words about my spiritual perfection and then I was able to sleep. When I woke I felt OK if I stayed in bed; but when I tried to walk, I was in great pain.

We prayed. Hymns from the Christian Science Hymnal brought me inspiration. The practitioner asked me to read some citations from Science and Health as well. It became evident to me that what I needed to learn was that I was not a mortal woman trying to be healed of a painful difficulty, but that I was spiritual, the image of God.

At one point I told the practitioner that I was glad it was raining, as I could not work in my garden anyway. But we discussed that I might try to go outside when it stopped raining. My first thought was something like "Oh, sure, I should go outside and work in the yard when I can hardly walk. How am I going to get out there?" Yet I felt the practitioner had been inspired to discuss this with me, and the next day I limped outside with my garden tools, sat down on the grass, and cleaned up flower beds for about two hours.
