"There must be a God!"

My husband and I were standing alone on a bluff, looking at the glorious sky as the sun set behind the mountains. As we stood in the silence of its beauty, a woman came up and joined us. She stood watching for a while and then in a quiet tone of awe said, "There must be a God!"

The woman's comment echoed in my thought for days. I wondered why some people find the beauty of nature explainable only in terms of the reality of God. Does it perhaps have as much to do with how we feel as with what we see? I remembered how I felt as we stood together watching the colors subtly change and intensify. There was a gentle and profound stillness, and I was at peace.

As I remembered the incident, I realized that the peace and harmony I felt were spiritual qualities that originate in God and express His presence. I was not responding simply to a material scene before me that would quickly fade and disappear. Rather, I was responding to what I discerned spiritually of the glorious nature of God's creation. I knew that God was not in the sunset in any pantheistic sense, but the glory of God had certainly been hinted at in the view before me.
