About ten years ago, after I had been studying Christian Science...
About ten years ago, after I had been studying Christian Science for forty years, I began to notice that my hearing was beginning to fail. I prayed off and on for several years concerning this. Then the thought came to me, "What do you expect at your time of life?" Immediately I refused to believe this as a legitimate thought, and some words from a Christian Scientist friend came to me: "Old age is not a time of life—it's an alibi, an excuse for not doing things at all that we used to do easily."
Shortly after this I reread an old article from a Sentinel, discussing the topic of hearing and listening. Also I read in Science and Health, "There is more Christianity in seeing and hearing spiritually than materially" (p. 487).
I read the article for several days, and when I was in church, all of a sudden it sounded to me like the Readers were shouting. After the service, I went outside and put my wristwatch up to my ear. For the first time in eight years I could hear it ticking plainly. Words cannot describe my gratitude for this healing and countless others over the years.
