This week the Sentinel looks at a new Bible translation; the question "Is church boring?"; an Australian's thoughts on "tools of transformation"; young seekers; and George Gallup's "Decade of Healing."

Barclay Newman, chief translations officer of the American Bible Society, is hard at work on a contemporary English version of the Bible.

He tells us that the project was initiated in 1984 with a Translation for Early Youth (TEY) in which the intention was to produce an accurate translation of the Bible in a style that an eight-or nine-year-old child could read aloud without stumbling, that younger children could listen to without misunderstanding, and that adults would appreciate without feeling they were being talked down to. The translation talked down to. The translation would be made directly from the original languages of the Scriptures, and would not be an adaptation of any existing translation or translations. It would possess its own integrity rather than serve as a "bridge" to other, more traditional translations.
