It is a great joy for me to share a few of the numerous healings I have had as a result of my study of Christian Science.
Before I began this study I was a cigarette smoker, and suffered from the effects of the habit. But all my struggles to give it up failed. I started to read issues of the Sentinel in 1986, and got a copy of Science and Health after that. As I read this textbook, I became confident that I could overcome smoking, even if the habit had held me in bondage for so many years. This confidence came as a result of the spiritual truths I read about God, man, and the universe. They were so true to me that I did not doubt them, and yielded to their power in consciousness.
I began to see myself as God's idea, His expression and manifestation. The word reflection as explained in Science and Health by Mary Baker Eddy began to come to me each time I was about to smoke a cigarette, and I would then pause to ask myself whether the act of smoking reflects God. I began to see that it conflicted with what I was learning. The spiritual status of man and the love of God became so important to me that in about three weeks the desire to smoke left me. As I continued with my study, coughs, chest pains, dizziness, fatigue, and the foul odours connected with smoking were all gone. This speedy healing amazed me greatly, until I later came across this: "Truth, spiritually discerned, is scientifically understood. It casts out error and heals the sick" (Science and Health, p. 275).
