I once found a definition of the word awake that involved becoming invigorated with new life. I saw this process in action for myself a few years ago as a result of Christian Science treatment. One day while my wife and I were on vacation at my sister's home, it started to rain. Running for cover, my wife slipped on the slick garage floor, falling down very hard. When I ran over to pick her up, she suddenly passed out. I carried her up to the house and put her on a bed.

Since my wife and I are both Christian Scientists, we often pray together and for each other. At that moment I needed to deal with my fear immediately. I began by first declaring aloud that there could not be any interruption of good, because God is eternal Life. I continued by realizing that no fear or condemnation for foolish or unintelligent action could enter thought, for man is in reality guided by the one, omniscient divine Mind.

As I continued, I began to feel my fear abate, and my thought opened up to messages from God. I remembered the first verse from Hymn 53:
