Health-care reform— some questions answered

Several offices at The Mother Church have received letters and calls about health-care reform in the United States. We felt it would help to publish a letter written by Mrs. Alicia Elliott of Juno Beach, Florida, and answer the questions she poses, although by the time you read this, the legislative process may well have taken new turns. The content of the various bills has been shifting almost hourly as ideas emerge and get their "reviews" from legislators and in the media.

The past several months have called for devoted thought from those representing the Church of Christ, Scientist, on the health-care issue in Washington, D.C. It's been a day-and-night labor to study the issues, think through the options, listen for direction, and then communicate effectively in the legislative arena. Many from outside Washington are also contributing their prayers and letters, for which we're very grateful.

The Christian Science Monitor is reporting and evaluating the intricate dimensions of the health-care discussion in Washington. The Committees on Publication are helping to coordinate the active engagement of our Church and its members, in the spirit of Mary Baker Eddy's stated life purpose, "... to impress humanity with the genuine recognition of practical, operative Christian Science" (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 207).
