Why finish school?
It's a question most of us have asked. And if you're a parent or a teacher, it's a question that's tough to answer. Most kids aren't satisfied with answers like "Because in this world, Johnny, you need an education." Or "You're going to school because I say you are—and you won't get your allowance if you don't!"
Of course, there were probably times when we all had the feeling there was something right or even wonderful about getting an education—about finishing school. Like the time your mom got all teary-eyed when you sang in the preschool play. Or the way your high-school math teacher made you love fractions in spite of yourself.
It was my Freshman English instructor at college who helped me see what was so important about education. One day he asked what I wanted to do in life. "Oh," I said enthusiastically, "I want to write!"
