The torch of spiritual understanding
Have you ever been out in the evening and seen a searchlight's beam moving about in the sky? These great lights shine clearly and resistlessly through the darkest night. One could not possibly disregard such a penetrating beam playing across a black sky.
When thought is threatened by the clouds of mortal sense, insisting that disease and fear are real and present, it is well to realize that the great torch of spiritual understanding is available to everyone right now and here. What is this torch? Is it not a spiritual light, revealing God's eternal omnipresence? The torch shows us God's tremendous, burning love, which obliterates disease. It illumines even the recesses of thought, dissolving the darkness of want and fear.
In Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mrs. Eddy "Evanescent materiality" is the marginal heading near the words "Error is the contradiction of Truth" (p. 472). The word evanescent means "tending to fade from sight; vanishing; ephemeral." That is what the torch of spiritual understanding does to error of any kind—it causes it to evanesce, or fade from thought and experience.
