The freedom of Soul

God didn't designate only some of His children to express joy, freedom, and beauty.

Recently I listened to a very talented jazz vocalist give a one-man concert. He not only performed the numbers he had planned very well, but he also asked for requests from the audience and spantaneously performed some songs that were suggested. At one point in the program, he asked for volunteers from the audience and improvised music with these people. He harmonized the voices and created beautiful, moving music—with perfect strangers! I was very impressed by these acts of spontaneity as well as by the ease and freedom with which this man performed. The love he expressed to the whole audience helped many people feel uninhibited enough to join in the merriment.

The freedom and joyful dominion demonstrated during the concert gave me a glimpse of the rich and infinite nature of man as the reflection of God, divine Soul. Man, who is truly not a limited mortal but the image and likeness of God, Soul, reflects dominion and freedom. Therefore, we can speak and act with perfect ease, joy, and confidence.

God is the creator of true being, and He provides all that is good to each of His children. So expressing the qualities of Soul isn't reserved for performers. Our ability to reflect Soul isn't dependent on circumstances, race, educational background, or any other human condition; it is an aspect of the true nature of every individual as God's perfect reflection. If you're a business person who needs to come up with an impromptu presentation, a homemaker who needs the right activity for the children at a moment's notice, an office worker who needs the inspiration to say just the right thing to a colleague or boss, or a student who needs the courage to speak up during class, you can rely on God, Soul—who has already given you the beauty and poetry, accuracy and power, to express your "part." Because man is the reflection of divine Soul, you naturally have the confidence and ability to complete any tasks like these. As Mrs. Eddy writes in Science and Health, "The influence or action of Soul confers a freedom, which explains the phenomena of improvisation and the fervor of untutored lips" (p. 89).
