Over three years ago my dentist told me I had gum disease

Over three years ago my dentist told me I had gum disease. He was quite concerned and felt that I needed immediate surgery because pockets in the gums were very deep and would not heal themselves. I sat in my car in the parking lot and prayed to know what was right for me to do—to have the operation or rely on Christian Science.

I knew my family would support me in whatever decision I made. I also knew that surgery was not the healing truth of Christian Science that I had relied on for many years. Christian Science is more to me than just a means for healing; it is a way of life. Part of a favorite Bible verse reads, "Choose you this day whom ye will serve; ... but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord" (Josh. 24:15). I decided I would rely completely on God for this healing.

For the rest of that afternoon, without any effort on my part, verses from the Bible repeated themselves to me, as did statements from Science and Health. I thought of hymns. It was the most joyous, uplifting, inspiring experience I have ever had. Truly the angels did minister unto me. Remembering that afternoon became an oasis in the months ahead, when fear, pain, and discouragement threatened to overwhelm me
