My husband, three-year-old son, and I were on an extended business trip in South America. While visiting Santiago, Chile, I was invited to tea several times. My newfound friends were happy, uncomplaining, and satisfied—qualities of character that were very evident to me, and that I wanted to possess too.
"What makes you feel this way?" I asked. They told me they were Christian Scientists and had found a spiritual way of living, thinking, and healing. I asked how I could emulate this way of life. Following their suggestion, I immediately bought the Bible, Science and Health, and the Christian Science Quarterly, and with my friends' guidance I studied the Bible Lesson daily.
Our next port of call was São Paulo, Brazil, where I became incapacitated with a severe, painful back problem. A doctor treated me, but I got no relief. I found the words so true that "man's extremity is God's opportunity." In spite of my family's love, I felt so alone, missing those dear friends in Chile who had opened a new way of thinking to me.
