In the early 1980s, I began to attend Christian Science...
In the early 1980s, I began to attend Christian Science church services on Wednesday nights, while still a member of another religious denomination. I remember one woman giving testimonies nearly every week, which helped me so much. I would regularly come home after those services and study late into the night because I was so excited and inspired by what I had heard. (Being greeted in church with such friendliness was also new to me—no one even frowned if I came late, and if I gave a testimony, people actually thanked me for it!)
After about one year, I called a practitioner whose name I had found in The Christian Science Journal. I asked if she knew of any course I could take to learn more about Christian Science. I found out that I could apply for Christian Science class instruction with any teacher listed in the Journal. I called one teacher and was soon accepted into the next class. I'll always be thankful that my teacher could see that I was hungry and ready for the class, even though I was not a member of a branch church yet. (Branch church membership came for me within one year of attending class.) Many times I have stated that every day since class has been an upward one.
A few years ago I recall reading four testimonies about losing weight. Two of them discussed leading a more balanced life. At that time, I felt burdened with a body that didn't fit into much of my wardrobe, and also with criticisms of others that seemed to be causing a war within me. When I got a new job, I saw I either needed to fit into the work outfits I already had or else go out and buy new clothes.
