In 1978 my daughter and I began to study Christian Science and to attend a branch church near our home.
One afternoon my daughter began to have severe stomach pains. They grew worse and her color changed to an unnatural hue. We knew very little about Christian Science at that time, but we felt that we should try to demonstrate its truths. We began to read the words of hymns, but the pain still increased.
At one point my daughter went to her room. Then, elevating my thought as much as possible, I picked up the textbook and opened it to this: "In Isaiah we read: 'I make peace, and create evil. I the Lord do all these things;' but the prophet referred to divine law as stirring up the belief in evil to its utmost, when bringing it to the surface and reducing it to its common denominator, nothingness. The muddy river-bed must be stirred in order to purify the stream" (Science and Health, p. 540).
