Late in 1985 my mother saw an article in The Australian Women's Weekly, part of a series on great women of history. This particular part was about Mary Baker Eddy, and from it I learned more about Christian Science. I was experiencing what was considered to be serious malfunction in the alkaline and acid levels of the body, and I had no energy for housework, gardening, or sustained walking. I had been receiving treatment from a dedicated naturopath and eating certain foods, vitamins, and minerals. But this afforded temporary relief only.

After some weeks I decided to make enquiries at the Christian Science Reading Room in Adelaide. The attendant was so understanding and helpful, and her explanation of a wonderful healing her mother had had impressed me deeply. She gave me a copy of Mrs. Eddy's book Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, and several copies of the Sentinel which shared accounts of healing through prayer.

As I read these publications I caught a glimpse of something very new to me. Although I had very little religious background, and there was a lot I did not understand, I did believe in God. During my illness I had used the only prayers I knew—The Lord's Prayer and the twenty-third Psalm. As I continued to study Science and Health, these words made an impression on me: "Rise in the strength of Spirit to resist all that is unlike good. God has made man capable of this, and nothing can vitiate the ability and power divinely bestowed on man" (p. 393).
