My parents enrolled me in a Christian Science Sunday...

My parents enrolled me in a Christian Science Sunday School at an early age, and I'll always be grateful for the dedicated teachers who helped me through my teen years to rely on God for healing.

Prior to World War II I tried to enlist in the flying branch of the United States Navy. This required a complete physical examination, and I was told I did not qualify because my eyesight did not pass the standard for flight crew training. I was very disappointed. But still I could not accept this verdict of imperfect eyes, remembering the spiritual description of eyes in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy: "Spiritual discernment,—not material but mental."

Soon after this I was drafted into the Army and sent for basic training. Near the end of boot camp, an announcement was made that an Army Air Corps testing team was coming to the town where our base was located and would be testing applicants for Air Corps cadet training. I asked for and received permission to take these tests.
