Children and their choices
Years ago, our children rode to and from preschool in a car pool with four or five other kids—and we moms and dads took turns doing chauffeur duty. One day, another mother in the car pool told me, "I asked your son a question I had no business asking him, and you should have heard what he told me!"
She explained that, since our son talked so much about going to church, she couldn't resist saying to him, "Now be perfectly honest. Would you rather go to church or to preschool?" (I remember thinking that question wasn't exactly fair, since he adored preschool!)
But the mother went on to say, "And you know what? He said he'd rather go to church!" I was almost as amazed as she was—and very pleased.
