The Discoverer of Christian Science wrote that God "guides every event of our careers" (Mary Baker Eddy, Unity of Good). I would like to share proof of this spiritual fact, which occurred while I was pursuing an advanced degree at a large Caribbean university.
My graduate committee, composed of my major professor and two other professors, was responsible for overseeing my thesis work, conducting required examinations, and granting approval for my graduation. My thesis was part of a larger project proposed by two of the professors and was directly related to their professional and scientific interests.
During the final months of my thesis preparation, several things happened that caused me to be very fearful. One of the members of my committee developed a negative attitude towards me that I did not understand; my major professor was planning to go on a trip to the Red Sea at the time of the Persian Gulf War, where another project required his attention; and rumors were flying that labor strikes could shut down the university indefinitely. Also, the university was known for delays in handling paperwork. Because I had accepted a position in another country, due to begin as soon as possible, I was eager to complete my studies. The fear that personal attitudes, whims, and inaction held control over my future was overwhelming.
