Many years ago I suffered recurring bouts of pneumonia, as well as of many allergies, which caused intense abdominal pain. At the time, our two children were just toddlers.
I had been attending regularly the church where my husband's family were members, and had been a Sunday School teacher, choir member, and member of the women's missionary society for many years. I also participated regularly in community volunteer work for the underprivileged. When illness overtook me, it became impossible to serve in these capacities.
Medical tests resulted in a drastic restriction of food intake; I was able to eat only baby food. The constantly recurring pneumonia kept me bedridden a good deal of the time. Antibiotics only made the body swell and produce hives. Depression stalked me. When treatment for neither the allergies nor the pneumonia was effective, I was told nothing more could be done.
