Being about our Father's business
Working for God is a joy!
Original in German
The Gospel of Luke tells about the time Christ Jesus was twelve years old and went to the annual Passover feast in Jerusalem with his parents. After the festivities, Jesus remained in Jerusalem, and his mother and Joseph spent three days searching for him. They finally found Jesus "in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions. And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers." They must have been all the more astonished at the answer he gave to his mother's question "Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us?" For he replied, "How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father's business?"
This has always been my guiding thought whenever I've had to look for fulfilling employment. In praying about employment, I have reminded myself that I cannot have a better "boss" than the divine Father, and I have listened carefully for God's thoughts. This divine direction has not only clearly indicated to me the nature of His "business"—creating and maintaining man and the universe in perfect harmony—but also has assured me of my place and my task in this work. And as I have learned better and better to understand God's convincing management style, which always produces the best results, I have been guided in my employment and career.
