When I was five years old, I was playing in a warehouse with my father. The warehouse had a loft. As I was coming down from it on a ladder, I lost my footing and fell about two stories to the concrete floor, severely injuring my arm.
My father, who was not a Christian Scientist, picked me up and took me to a hospital emergency room. The doctor there felt it necessary to call in a specialist. I underwent surgery to set my arm, which was not completely successful; the doctor predicted my arm would not grow normally.
At this point we decided to rely entirely on Christian Science for this situation. A Christian Science practitioner had been asked to pray for my mother and me. I was released from the hospital with the understanding that I would see a specialist once a month for X-rays and monitoring of my condition. Nevertheless, the doctor maintained that my parents were making a mistake and that my arm could only get worse if nothing were done for it.
