Seventeen years ago I started to feel pain in my back and one hip. The condition grew worse, even though I was trying to heal it through Christian Science prayer. Eventually, when I had to stay away from work, I took up more specific prayerful work. Still, there was no alleviation of the pain.
Under conditions of contract, it was necessary after three days' absence from work to produce a certificate, in order to ensure the continuous payment of my salary. This fact made it necessary to decide whether to call a doctor or to ask for the help of a Christian Science practitioner, and I decided on the latter. The practitioner I rang offered to help me, and to provide the necessary certificate for my employer.
The practitioner asked that I study Principle, one of the synonyms for God given in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. (Other synonyms include Mind, Soul, Spirit, Life, Truth, and Love.) I was to telephone the practitioner after a few days and report on my progress. When I telephoned, my report took the form of reading from the notes I had made during my study, but I also had to report a worsening of the condition.
