What side are you on?
Having what we need becomes more certain as we rely wholly on the divine source of all good.
For many people today, important needs or desires can seem unattainable. Very basic needs such as shelter and transportation may pose financial challenges. Even people considered wealthy can become absorbed in believing they need more to be satisfied. We may not have thought of it in this way before, but how we identify ourselves may be the most important factor if we are to feel more secure about supply.
Are we helpless mortals subject to the whims of the market place, to an unjust society? At times it would certainly appear so. But we can challenge this view of man as a vulnerable, physical being, living in a material universe governed by chance. The Bible reveals a very different view of man as created in the image of God, perfect and having God-given dominion. (See Gen. 1:26, 27.) The study of Christian Science helps us see that as we identify ourselves as the spiritual, wholly free image of God, invariable Love, we can increasingly overcome the limiting, material sense of existence, which always argues there isn't enough. We can turn away from the conventional, worldly view of life and substance and look to infinite Spirit. This opens our thought to recognizing and experiencing God's unfailing care. A verse in Malachi points beautifully to our creator's provision: "Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it."
When I was in college, my expenses were met with the help of scholarships and loans. I also worked part time. This wasn't enough, however, to pay for a special program that was offered in my junior year. When the deadline for submitting the required funds was approaching, I called a Christian Science practitioner and went to his office. We talked, and he read to me several spiritual truths from the Bible and from the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. These truths affirmed God to be in control of His creation and caring for His idea, man.
