In 1991, two weeks before the yearly meeting of my Christian Science Students Association, my wife of thirty-five years passed away. The loss seemed overwhelming; we had been so close. I thought briefly about not attending the meeting, but this thinking did not last long. I knew I belonged there and that I needed to hear the address about "life unafraid."

During this period, I battled feelings of grief and recurring mental images of recent months, which were disturbing. Each day I studied the Bible Lessons from the Christian Science Quarterly. I prayed to find comfort. Christ Jesus offers this wonderful consolation in his Sermon on the Mount: "Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted." I knew from my own past experiences of healing in Christian Science that somehow, in this hour of need, God would provide me with whatever I needed to understand in order to find peace of mind.

On association day I listened intently to my teacher's inspiring address. I received much comfort and felt greatly loved in the uplifting atmosphere of the meeting. I found assurance in one particular statement, warning not to be hypnotized by morbid thoughts and situations. This stayed with me, and I mulled it over several times during the meeting.
