The healing Christ
I heard the other day of some significant healing work being done by someone I know engaged in the public practice of Christian Science healing. Interested, I called, and while we talked, it was apparent that this practitioner was conscious more and more of what the Discoverer of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy, calls "the living, palpitating presence of Christ, Truth, which healed the sick" (Science and Health). This is a phrase used by Mrs. Eddy when she described the effect of understanding the spiritual sense of the creed. As the practitioner explained, whenever Christ, Truth, is real to her, disease, the effects of accident, or distress of whatever nature simply dissolves and disappears.
So it is natural to ask, What is this healing Christ, Truth?
It is the true idea of God. But when this is said, it doesn't mean just an idea that comes to our thought. This idea comes to human consciousness as the infinite glory of God, the allness and everywhereness of good, destroying error, all sickness and sin. Christ makes us so conscious of health, harmony, soundness, and order that all sense of discord or pain disappears, is destroyed. To experience the presence and power of divine Love communicated by Christ is to cease experiencing its opposite, sickness and disease. This also benefits those who call upon us for aid. To use the words of the Bible, "The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined."
