One morning I tripped and fell headlong down a flight of eight stairs. I had just finished reading the weekly Bible Lesson (from the Christian Science Quarterly) and was on my way downstairs to sweep our front veranda.

The subject of the lesson I had just read was "Man," and I had gained in thought a clear sense of man as a spiritual idea of God. Mrs. Eddy writes in Science and Health: "Man is not matter; he is not made up of brain, blood, bones, and other material elements. The Scriptures inform us that man is made in the image and likeness of God. Matter is not that likeness." I remember that as I tripped and fell, there flashed through my thought the certainty that man is spiritual. God is divine Mind and knows His creation as spiritual ideas. Man is the highest of these ideas, and God upholds man in a perfect, indestructible state of existence. I had no fear at all.

Although I landed heavily on my shoulder and the back of my head, I was very relaxed; the force of the impact did not affect me. I lay still for a few moments, continuing to declare to myself that I was unhurt because of these spiritual facts. I then got up and continued down the next flight of stairs to do the sweeping. I knew that this protection came not only from my immediate acknowledgment of my spiritual identity but also from a lifetime of learning to trust my welfare to God, ever-present Love.
