"I never say to a judge, 'This is an evil person...'"
Scott H. Walden is the Adams County State's Attorney in Quincy, Illinois. He began practicing law after graduating from Valparaiso University School of Law in 1978 and was a partner in a private law firm. We feel that Mr. Walden takes a unique approach to his work as a state prosecutor.
Scott, what is your work like as a state prosecutor? What types of cases are you assigned to? We have every kind of case there is—everything from speeding to murder. But most of my time is spent handling drug cases and child sexual abuse cases.
How do you see your job—what is the purpose of what you do? Well, punishment is a very significant part of what my job is about. I attempt to convict people of various crimes and seek what I think is an appropriate punishment. In fact, I see punishment as part of an educational process. We all need to be educated out of whatever misconceptions we have. Sometimes a misconception is just the difference between right and wrong.
