Religious rights and the role of government
Religious rights and the authority of religious advocates to practice what they preach has been a hard-fought-for and valued tradition in U.S. society.
In fact, religion has often enjoyed "deference," if not "preference," in the United States. Of course, many nations honor religious freedom in their own constitutions and other policy documents.
Yet religious practice continues to come under the close scrutiny of government in the United States. And control of actions exercised under religious belief has tightened for the following reasons:
