We don't live in a disposable world
When friends were visiting us from another country, I asked them what advice they would give to an American. They pondered for a moment and then said two words, "Waste less."
They followed up with a joke they'd heard. A visiting American was tossing something from a window when he slipped and fell into the trash bin below. Just then two people walked by, one saying to the other, "That's Americans for you. Throwing away that fellow when he's got a good twenty years left in him!"
We laughed together, but it wasn't easy laughter. We all realized that it takes effort to change the way we live.
