More than a bumper sticker slogan
Around our town I see a bumper sticker on various cars. It reads: "Think globally, act locally."
We hear a lot about this lately. Often the discussion of global-ness focuses upon the interrelationships of all people in the world and on new economic strategies. But it's interesting to see how a big topic like this one makes demands on us that are quite specific, close to home, and Christian.
In earlier days, when we didn't know nearly as much about one another, the unique individuality of people was often lost sight of, and people considered as "foreigners" blended together in a blur of stereotypes, like brilliant and beautiful paints run together into some amorphous, dull blob. This is changing, and we're all coming to realize that whether people live in the Soviet Union, Ecuador, Indonesia, Czechoslovakia—wherever—we have common hopes, struggles, love for family: shared spiritual needs and spiritual capacities to contribute brilliantly to the human enterprise.
