One day, a number of years ago, I stubbornly tried to move a chest of drawers upstairs from the basement by myself. I was barefooted, and I dropped the chest on my foot. The pain was intense, but I managed to crawl into the living room. My wife came home a few minutes later and found me on the floor. She telephoned a Christian Science practitioner to ask for help through prayer. The pain, as well as symptoms of shock, left right away. There seemed to be broken bones, but I decided to rely totally on God as "a very present help in trouble" (Psalms) and to trust the healing effect of my own prayers and those of my wife and the practitioner.

The needed adjustments were made within a few days; on two consecutive nights I was wakened by something moving painlessly within my foot, and there was marked improvement in my ability to use the foot.

An evening or two later I was aware of the complete healing. I had gone to the store. It was about to close, when I discovered I had forgotten my wallet. Our home was about a block and a half away, and I ran home to get my wallet. As I opened the gate to our yard I realized that I was running completely freely. I got my money and made it back to the store just in time.
