About ten years ago, after much concern expressed by my family, I agreed to have surgery in order to remove a cataract affecting one eye. (Unsuccessful surgery on the other eye had been performed before I became interested in Christian Science.) Following the operation I was happy at first to be driving, biking, and walking freely again; but within a year or so my vision became clouded and I was unable to drive.
The condition continued to worsen, but this time I turned to God completely, more trustingly, and more earnestly. I knew that a healing in Christian Science is permanent. I prayed and studied the Bible and Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. The description in Science and Health of eyes as "spiritual discernment,—not material but mental" was especially helpful.
There were times of great mental struggling. Self-pity and self-will had to be overcome through prayer. At first I was just waiting for a change to take place in the physical condition, but slowly my thought began turning toward the spiritual concept of seeing, and I began trusting God's direction. As the Psalmist said, "Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path."
